Description
Stethacanthus (now Akmonistion) zangerli was a primitive shark from the Carboniferous of Scotland. The second part of the paleozoic saw the emergence of a number of extremely weird-looking sharks, including this one. The first dorsal fin had the shape of an anvil. The function of this bizzare organ is debated. The fish measured about 70 cm long.

We still have some of these weird sharks around today - like the hammerhead. They're pretty awesome, provided you're not bleeding in the water with one.
