Strange thing I don't get is. If its a Whale which is a mammal. Why does it have saurus at the end. I mean saurus is for animals that are reptiles?

The fossil was first described in 1834 by Harlan who thought it belonged to a reptile, thus the name.

Is "archeocete" just an umbrella term for all of the primitive whales? I noticed that some people put Pakicetus in with Basilosaurus, and the two are not really all that similar.

Sort of, but they have a number of primitve characteristics in common the most obvious ones being the presence of hindlimbs, fully developped in the case of Pakicetus but vestigials in the case of Basilosaurus.
